![]() It was hard to see, but I was able to make out John Mellencamp’s signature, as he began to talk about how he and “John” would collaborate together on occasion in the 1980s.Īfter asking why he had that specific album on the wall, he said it was because he wrote one of the songs. He pointed to a framed gold record that was hung high on the wall near the entrance. As he worked the scissors, he began reminiscing about his time in Indiana. We talked music theory, chord changes, differences between various bluegrass instruments, and playing techniques. ![]() He seemed to be genuinely excited at the fact that his day was being filled cutting the hair of fellow musicians. He seemed unusually passionate about music, so when it was my turn, I told him why I was in Portland and that I happened to be in a bluegrass group myself with a few of my fellow professors at Indiana University. Dan was talking about playing the mandolin, banjo, and jamming out in general with one of the customers who was also a musician. The place was decorated like a living room, complete with a comfortable couch and magazines scattered about the coffee table. ![]() When I entered, I was immediately greeted with bluegrass music playing over the speakers. After checking out a few ratings, I found myself walking through the doors of the Gladstone Street Barber Shop, owned and operated by Dan Ross. On the day of Portland’s premiere, I thought I’d try something I haven’t done in a long time – get a haircut and a shave at an old school barber shop. ![]()
